Bilberry is credited for being the ancestor of several other North American berry-producing shrubs, namely blueberry. The dark purple fruits are used the same way as other edible berries to make jams, jellies, pies and other sweet treats. The leaf is used to make tea, often in combination with other botanicals.

Also known as European blueberry, bilberry is a shrub closely related to huckleberry, cranberry and American blueberry. While the dark fruit is a rich source of antioxidant anthocyanosides, bilberry leaf also offers free radical-scavenging compounds, including catechins, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonols and proanthocyanidins. As with the delicious fruit, bilberry leaf is employed in the nutraceutical, food and cosmetic industries.
